BASIC Stamp I in a PIC '58

Stamp Version D PIC'58

A new production possibility just opened up for projects based on the BASIC Stamp I! Now you can do all your prototyping on a BASIC Stamp I and, when your code is finalized, program it directly into a PIC16C58! With the BASIC Stamp I editor (v2.0+) and our PIC16Cxx Programmer (v4.1+ firmware), you can program our PBASIC interpreter and your tokenized source code into one very low cost chip, which is 100% compatible with the BASIC Stamp I.

The PIC16C58 is pin-compatible with the PIC16C56 used in the original BASIC Stamp version D (shown above on the left), so you can use the same circuit components as shown in the programming manual's General Stamp Schematic in your final design. In fact, to test out your programmed PIC'58, you can simply plug it in place of the interpreter chip in the BASIC Stamp version D!

Some other advantages, besides low-cost, are noteworthy as well. Since your application's entire PBASIC code is stored internally in the PIC'58, the 256-byte serial EEPROM (normally holding both program and data) is left entirely free for data. Additionally, if you have no need for non-volatile data storage, you may simply remove the EEPROM and brownout circuit from the final design, leaving you with only three major components: 1) the PIC16C58, 2) a 4 MHz resonator and 3) a 5-volt regulator.

If you already own a PIC16Cxx Programmer with version 4.1+ firmware, then you already have everything you need to make your own PIC'58 Stamp. The new Stamp.exe v2.0+ is included on the diskette in your programmer or upgrade package.

If you have a PIC16Cxx Programmer, but don't have the latest firmware, you may simply order the upgrade package to add this functionality.

You can download the latest version of the BASIC Stamp I editor (v2.1) for free!
Note to v2.0 owners: Although v2.0 of the editor will work with the PIC'58 option, the REVERSE command was not fully implemented and causes erratic behavior when used on the '58. Version 2.1 fixes this problem.
