Course Description

Laboratory course stressing experimental techniques, laboratory reporting, safety, and instrumentation. Experimental investigation of basic steady-state and transient circuits.
Corequisite(s): ECE 201 or EGR 203.

Topics

  1. Laboratory safety, basic measurements of resistance, voltage, and current using handheld multimeter.
  2. Prototype construction with solderless breadboard. Introduction to components: LEDs, lamps, DC motors, and light-sensitive resistors. I-V characteristics and Ohm's Law , Kirchoff's current law (KCL) and voltage law (KVL)
  3. Introduction to data acquisition system, analog input, digital inputs and outputs.
  4. CD4011 chip (quad NAND gates), Wheatstone bridge, MATLAB softscope.
  5. Introduction to Agilent function generator and oscilloscope, basic waveforms, analog output using data acquisition system.
  6. Design problem, LM348 operational amplifier circuits, diode characteristics
  7. Introduction to transistors, full-wave rectifier.
  8. Capacitance measurements, RC time constants
  9. LC and LCR circuits, frequency analysis
